Description

This fall, the OHTN will be hosting two conferences in Northern Ontario, continuing the string of small, regional conferences that began with Back to Basic and Inside and Out.

These conferences focus on the complex care needs of Northern communities. The first two days of each conference will feature plenary presentations and interactive workshops on topics including:

  • HIV epidemiology in Northern Ontario
  • Syndemics affecting gay men, Indigenous people and people who use substances
  • HCV prevention, engagement and care
  • Innovative ways to connect to HIV care
  • Health literacy
  • Trauma-informed care
  • Stigma and discrimination

The third day of each workshop will offer a training session on motivational interviewing for service providers, led by Tim Guimond. If you wish to attend the training on motivational interviewing, please select that ticket type. Only 30 spots are available.

Local service providers will also have an opportunity to sign up to give lightning presentations on the programs they offer.

FAQs

Can I attend ONLY the Motivational Interviewing Training?

Yes. All three days of the conference are free, and we encourage you to attend them all, but, if you'd like to register only for the training on day three, that can be arranged. Please contact the OHTN's event planner, Cheryl Hamel, if you wish to register only for day three.

What's a carousel presentation and who can give one?

A carousel presentation is a 5-minute presentation that you give several times to different groups of people. The audience rotates through several stations, listening to different five-minute presentations in sequence.

At Northern Exposures, we'd like service providers from Northern Ontario to present on important successes and/or challenges that they've experienced. This is your chance to share information on what your organization does well, highlight opportunities for more collaboration, or draw attention to some of the key issues faced by your organization and clients. You can also bring handouts or visual aids to your station.

That being said, there aren't rigid guidelines for what we'll accept - if you have a good idea, volunteer to talk about it!

Wait -- weren't they called lightning presentations?

We initially advertised them as lightning presentations - anyone who volunteered to give a lightning presentation is, of course, invited to join the carousel!

What's the format for the workshops?

The format for each workshop can vary, but the main idea is for information to flow two ways. Workshops offer a chance to go in-depth on a particular topic or research project, to learn more about it, and to share what you already know through feedback and discussion.

More details about each specific workshop will be posted to the OHTN website as they become available.
